Flarepath Newsletter 04 May 2012

Hello folks!

Winter is upon us and we need to be thinking of all those people out there who don?t have the comforts of thick coats, warm blankets or underfloor heating.

I'll be doing another collection of winter clothing and blankets for our local shelters so please let me know if you have anything to give away to keep someone warm this Winter. Check out 5.5 below for another initiative aimed at assisting shelters in Cape Town.

Take care, keep warm and buckle-up on those wet roads!

Shanti

1.1. THE STORY AND MUSIC OF BASIL “MANNENBERG” COETZEE - royston.stoffels@gmail.com

Written*Directed*Performed by Royston Stoffels with Edgar Whitley

VENUE: THEATRE ARTS ADMIN COLLECTIVE

TIME:          19H30
PRICE:         R50.00
BOOKING:   For more information call 021-4479984 or email

"B" is a heritage project, written by me - celebrating the life of one of
South Africa's great, definitive musicians - Basil Manenberg Coetzee.
He was born and nurtured in District 6, moved to Manenberg then Mitchell's
Plain where he died in 1998. He adopted the middle-name from the struggle
anthem of the townships "Manenberg is where it's happening". He spent his
entire life searching " his own sound" through the saxophone, flute and
penny-whistle. He told stories through his music and his conversations with
people. Basil died at the age of 56 , of cancer - virtually penniless with a rich legacy of music and a genre of music known as 'Cape Jazz'.

His story , his musical journey and legacy is told by myself and Edgar
Whitley, a lifelong friend of Basil. Having discovered that Basil had held
a very special special place in both our lives, we decided to pool our
knowledge a create a show around the idea. Through some of of own
experiences we re-live moments in his life by using some of his very own
words. The show features some of his memorable recordings as well as lesser known ones.

I met and befriended Basil from 1995 to '97 after a challenge by one of my
friend's to 'get Basil to play with me'. I play the piano and a play mostly
my own songs. Just in my music room - and to a few friends who would pop
over for a musical jam. I contacted Basil and we slowly built up a very special musical relationship and friendship. Our music project was called 'Homegown' – me on piano and him on Saxophone and flute. We had a season at Elaine's in Observatory, a few private gigs, played at the KKNK and a concert at the Baxter Theatre.

Our story also pays tribute to the numerous South African musicians whose
stories are often ones of - 'riches to rags' ! And whose stories are
untold. Fortunately Basil had given interviews and was never afraid to speak his mind - so we, the actors , often 'become' him. It is told in humorous and
light-hearted scenes which also tells some of the story of Royston and
Edgar.

I have been an actor for almost forty years and have been focusing on South
African Heritage stories to perform as. The established South African
theatre managements still seem cast by colour - for expediency. " Let's use
a coloured in this role ..." or " we better use more blacks if we want to
get sponsorship. Basil's contribution to the struggle for liberation from apartheid was huge and underestimated. When he looked inward and rediscovered the old cape slave songs infused with N'kosi sikelel' ifrika as well as a Langarm and klopse music punctuated with a black-power sign and, 'Viva!'

The show is 50 minutes long . It is a try-out show of only FOUR performances. At the end of each show there will be a feedback session with the audience. The script will then go back to the drawing board for adjustment and refining and of course it's assessment as a viable production.

Performances are at the Theatre Arts Admin Collective. At the Observatory
Methodist Church Hall on the corner of Milton and Wesley Roads Observatory.
It is an intimate production and seating is limited.

Dates: 9, 10, 11, 12 May at 19.30

LBM CONSUMER SURVEY

Lunch Box Media was formed in 2009 and brought together like-minded media owners, whose publications target the lesbian and gay market, to help mainstream brands communicate with these communities.

To update existing data and assist corporate brands in targeting this market through in-depth knowledge of the purchasing habits of the pink consumer, Lunch Box Media has now commissioned the ‘LBM Gay Consumer Profile’ survey.

Lunch Box Media owner Donovan Steyl says: “We are aiming to make this the largest survey of its kind in South Africa to make it a truly valid representation of the South African gay and lesbian population.”

Steyl notes that, thanks to the succinct format of the online questionnaire, respondents will be able to complete the survey in less than five minutes.

1.6. STREETS OF OUR LIVES EXHIBITION - culture.cpt@alliance.org.za

By Gregor Röhrig - Monday 7 to Saturday 26 May 2012

Curated by Gregor Röhrig and Bianca Pieper, and comprising a focused selection of approximately 20 works, the exhibition highlights day to day scenes of street life from across the globe, shot candidly in cities spanning New York, to the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City, to the fishing towns of the Cape.
Röhrig explores images that relay a sense of social commentary and historic value. Street life in any city, at any given time, is fluid. There is so much more to the streets than just clues to the economic or political situation. There’s captivating imagery highlighting the social and cultural diversity of its people. The images exhibited provide a glimpse of how people live, work, sleep, play, and dialogue. The photographs individually tell a story and as a body of work present an overall intriguing fusion of scenarios and people.

When a big city has a mysterious outbreak of blindness, the victims are quarantined by the government in a hospital without any medical care, treatment or hygiene. Among the first people affected by the so called "white blindness" are an ophthalmologist and his reluctant healthy wife who has not lost her sight but stays with him to help him in the difficult moment. The place immediately crowds and a group of criminals takes the power.
Adapted from the novel of the same name written by Portuguese author José Saramago, the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008.

1.8. FILM SCREENINGS AT ALLIANCE FRANCAISE – culture.cpt@alliance.org.za

FRENCH CINEMA - Film screening 'Louise Michel'
Tuesday 8 May, 19h00, free entrance
A special loan from the French Institute - A once-off screening not to miss!
French version with French subtitles, 1h34
When the female workers of a provincial factory are laid off, they wonder what to do with their pooled compensation money.
A nude calendar idea is instantly discarded in favour of a proposal from dishevelled co-worker Louise (Yolande Moreau): she says they should hire a hitman to whack the boss, but the only hitman they can find is an incompetent called Michel (Bouli Lanners) who couldn't assassinate his way out of a paper bag. There are some nicely bizarre moments. Louise asks in a bar for the whereabouts of a gunman called Luigi: absolutely everyone gives the same shrugging little raspberry-noise to indicate they don't know. Later, Michel demonstrates his odd fondness for firing his handgun – one of an extensive collection – at the various constellations in the night sky.

TURKISH CINEMA - Film screening 'Three monkeys'
Tuesday 15 May 2012, 19h00, free entrance
Turkish version with English subtitles, 1h50
On a dark road, a half-asleep politician strikes and kills a pedestrian, then pays off an employee to take the fall. While the employee's in prison, his wife begins an affair with the politician - until her teenage son, moody already and loyal to his father, finds out. The setup for Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan's drama "Three Monkeys" makes the movie sound like a noir thriller.

Friday 25 - Sunday 27 May at the beautiful Bodhi Khaya Retreat Centre nr Hermanus with Gen Pagpa, Resident teacher of Tushita Kadampa Buddhist Centre

Learn how to recognize and undo the problems & suffering that arise within relationships. Love is the greatest source of happiness there is, but attachment causes no end of pain. We love each other and yet we are not free from the experience of suffering and pain.

The relationships between parents and their children, between couples, or even just between friends, often suffer from misunderstanding, unrealistic expectations, blaming, and sometimes even disputes and fighting.

On this retreat we will learn to experience the joy of true love and to acquire the skill to identify our own inner attachment and learn to reduce and eradicate it from our mind.

The programme will begin at 8pm (check-in is from 6pm followed by supper) on Friday to 1.30pm on Sunday. It will consist of inspiring guided meditations, practical teachings and meaningful discussion. There will be plenty of time for enjoying the peace and beauty of the nature reserve that the Centre is based within. This is an ideal location for a refreshing and uplifting retreat!

Cost: R850 for a shared room incl. all vegi meals (there are just a few single rooms for R1050) Please book well in advance as these retreats are always popular. Info: 021 685 3428.

Sisters in Circles is designed to assist women in awakening and harnessing the power of their Being. As natural healers we can bring about the changes in our lives that we desire using many of the same methods our Ancestors used. Sisters in Circles workshops offer both experiential and ceremonial elements. Using shamanic and alchemical techniques and guided by a ceremonialist and shaman we will journey together into the deep inner reserve of Knowing that guides all women who are willing to Hear.

The Workshop: Dreaming Gourds & Womb Work: Cape Town - 25, 26, 27 May 2012 (Fri – Sun) A woman’s body is a magickal and creative transformer of energy in which All Things are Possible. By learning to Trust ourselves and our bodies we can learn to work with our body’s wisdom. We can take charge of our energy to ride our cycles and express our power and individuality in ways that do not infringe on anyone else. We can birth waves of peace, compassion and healing into our own worlds and into the collective.

A weekend of teachings and experiences designed to help us connect on a deeper level to the alchemical power of our bodies. Partly through the use of Dreaming Gourds: These Gourds are a tool we will make together to use to help us nurture our Dreams into living realities. The gourds are a mirror of the Womb where all that we create is gestated. The womb, also called The Marriage Basket, not simply the physical organ – a womb is much more than a uterus. Our womb holds a sacred space for physical children but it is also a sacred space for what we call “spirit children”. We will learn to birth these spirit children for the healing of self, life and all others.

Key Words for this Weekend: Introspection, Intuition & Transformation Learn to better access your Power to Create.

CKAT, is the acronym for Chad and Kevin Adventure Tours, based in Cape Town South Africa, operating along both coasts of the world famous Cape Peninsula, the company offers boating services, snorkeling trips, coastal safaris and skin diving instruction.

Operating out of Kalk Bay Harbour on suitable weather days, we offer:
Boat rides - This scenic trip lasts about half an hour and passes close to the coastal suburbs of Clovelly, Fish Hoek, Sunny Cove and St. James.
Seal Island Trips - This excursion lasts about one and a half hours so we recommend booking in advance. We'll take you around Seal Isalnd in False Bay, home to some 65 000 cape fur seals, a colony of penquins and thousands of other sea birds.
Kelp forest snorkelling - After a brief introduction to snorkeling which takes place in a tidal pool, you'll be ready to explore the wonders of the Cape kelp forests under the watchful eyes of a qualified instructor. We provide full wetsuits and all equipment suited to local conditions.
Boat based snorkelling - These excursions are enjoyed by snorkelers as well as those just along for the ride. We hug the rugged coastline and keep an eye out for marine wildlife such as whales, dolphins, seals and penguins often close enough to shore for spotting other game like ostriches, buck and baboons. The highlight of this trip however is when we drop anchor in a sheltered cove and the snorkelers get to explore a prolific kelp forest whilst the others soak up some African sunshine and tranquility.
Coastal Safari's - Besides majestic mountains, coastal caves and colonies of sea birds nesting against sheer cliffs, also expect to encounter whales (especially August through November), dolphins, seals, penguins and more...
Private charters - Our comfortable 8 meter long rigid inflatable cabin cruiser is powered by two quiet four stroke 90hp engines and is available for scuba diving, safari's, party cruises, birding, fishing and film industry charters.

5. MISCELLANEOUS

5.1. ANIMAL RESCUE ORGANISATION OUTREACH - sashapets@gmail.com

Here in the Western Cape things have been moving a bit slowly, but we are going ahead with our mobile unit project and have just authorised Chridan Trailers to go ahead with the construction of a purpose built trailer.  We have had much discussion with the SA Veterinary Council and are optimistic that it will be up and running with their full approval in a couple of months.
Many thanks must go to one of our volunteers for her tenacity at driving this project and for her fundraising efforts – she has single-handedly raised sufficient funds to cover the entire capital costs!  Huge thanks to all the individuals and companies who have donated.
We do still need to continue fundraising for the running costs and would love to hear from anyone who can help, and of course we will be very grateful for any donations, however small.  Check www.animalrescue.org.za for our banking details and put as a reference “outreach mobile” if you would like to contribute to this very worthy cause.  Remember we are registered as a Public Benefit Organisation so tax relief can be claimed.

Wish list for mobile unit:
back-up generator
caravan fridge 12V and gas
2 x ground sheets to go under the awnings portaloo collapsible cages
2 x 50 litre plastic water bottles
2 x fire extinguishers
50m electrical lead
operating lights
12 Volt battery
caravan air-conditioner
2 x stainless steel soap dispensers for above the basins

I was in Paternoster again recently and we certainly seem to have made improvements in the town.  We have sterilised 16 dogs and 2 cats but also a number of dogs arrived which had already been sterilised, seeking treatments for various ailments or making use of our dip to combat ticks and fleas.  We also vaccinated and de-wormed a number of animals.

Many thanks - Dr Yvonne Robson

5.3. MUTT & MEOW OF THE YEAR COMPETITION - www.muttandmeow.co.za

Vote now for your favourite pet in the Mutt & Meow of the Year competition.

On Monday 23 May, a new Mutt & Meow of the Year will be crowned winners of the online pet competition sponsored by Royal Canin and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA. The competition is an online version of the original, which has been running since 2001. To date, over 100 entries have been received with hundreds of votes coming through on a daily basis.

Voting for your favourite pet is done in the form of a donation. Each time you donate, the total amount raised in the name of that pet is calculated, and at the end of the competition, the pet that has raised the most amount of money will win the top fundraiser category. So, the more that you donate, the greater the chance that pet has of winning. In addition, all monies raised from this competition will be used by the CoGH SPCA to care for sick, injured and abused animals.

To vote, visit the website, click on the "Vote for Me!" button for your favourite pet and you will be taken to a page where you can vote in the form of a donation for them.

5.4. CAN ANYONE HELP ME PLEASE? OLD MAC NEEDED - Gina - gina@cream.co.za

I know I am sending a tall request, but hey, if you don’t ask you won’t know. Almost 2 years ago I was training to do the Mongol derby. My horse got a fright and fell onto me on the way home. Even though I was wearing a hat my brain hit my own skull. I still have trouble with my walking.

My computer died while I was in a coma for 1.5 months. I have a new computer now - an Apple that can't support freehand. So I have to learn a whole new programme because the new Macs don’t support freehand. I am asking if anyone has an old Mac they would like to get rid of. Or I would like to go to oxygen therapy which is like R1700 a pop and I need to go for 5 - 50 times. Is there anyone out there that could help me?

I still can’t walk comfortably by myself. I haven't even tried to drive a car. I am struggling. I know it is a tall request, but if you do not ask you will never know. Thank you!
