1.1. STEVE NEWMAN’S 60th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION and CONCERT - tonycox@netactive.co.za

WHERE: Olympia Bakery
WHEN: Wed 25th Jan
TIME: 20h00
BOOKING: tonycox@netactive.co.za – 076 105 3310
COST: R150 (Including light vegetarian supper)

Iconic South African acoustic guitar genius, Steve Newman celebrates his 60th birthday this January. Steve is known throughout SA and way beyond its borders for his incredible body of award-winning work dedicated to the fine art of acoustic guitar playing. This is not a genre that brings massive wealth and certainly has never fit in to the rank commercialisation of our music industry, yet it is a fact that if you want to look for true, gifted, musical genius one must look beyond the obvious to where the real cutting edge actually is.

Steve Newman is exactly where that cutting edge is. Non-conformist, uninterested in accolades of any sort, propelled purely by his love of music and his pleasure at sharing what he has with others. In any other world the man would be a multi-millionaire purely for his skills.

He is though, much more than just a great guitarist; he is a compassionate and passionate humanist, a loyal friend, husband and a great father.

His musical works, recordings, collaborations and performances span forty years. He created South Africa’s one and only super-group, Tananas back in the early 80’s and this trio of gifted musicians went on to play all over the world. There was nothing quite like them and nothing since. His long association with Tony Cox touched the hearts and ears of several generations and they are still going strong today performing to sold-out shows after 3 decades of performance together.

Going back to early days, Steve formed many groups around himself such as the Squirrel Skinners and the Biscuit Raiders both with a strong bluegrass flavour but with cross-over jazz idioms, all delivered with sparkling arrangements and a great sense of mischief and fun. Before that he had various groups and buddies he played with at school. Many of these guys will be at Steve’s 60th to create a night of musical mayhem and a Steve Newman retrospective stretching back to the beginning. The night promises to deliver up the most unexpected musical concoctions and by all intents and purposes lift your heart and put a smile on your dial...

Come and say happy birthday to the boy…

1.2. JIMMY DLUDLU & CLAIRE PHILLIPS AT KIRSTENBOSCH - monique@hippocommunications.com

Jimmy Dludlu has come a long way from that moment when at the age of 13 he first picked up a handmade guitar.  That moment however set his path.  He taught himself to play and went on to become a global jazz icon.   Long before record companies were aware of his talent, he was already celebrated as one of the hottest most stylish talents on the South African jazz music scene.  He is an icon in the music industry and in the last Decade has continued to compose and make the kind of jazz music that stirs the soul - clearly influenced by various cultures around the continent and his interaction with other musicians on the world stage.   His new album; “TONOTO”, introduces new facets of Jimmy and opens you up to feeling the world in a whole new way.

Claire Phillips will perform an opening act at this concert. As a singer- songwriter and musician, Claire’s repertoire spans jazz, funk, soul and folk. She plays the guitar, piano, saxophone and drums, but her acoustic guitar is her instrument of choice. Claire Phillips was the first musician in the country to win a SAMA Award for a debut album The Old Mutual Summer Sunset Concerts take place at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden (Rhodes Avenue, Newlands, Cape Town) on Sundays from 17h00 – 19h00.

1.4. DAN PATLANSKY & NATASHA MEISTER AT KIRSTENBOSCH - monique@hippocommunications.com
To achieve legend-status as a Blues-musician at the age of 30 is almost unheard of.  What Dan Patlansky can do with a six-string Fender Stratocasterat at this young age, most critically acclaimed guitarists will never quite achieve in a lifetime.

Twenty year old singer – songwriter Natasha Meister will join Dan Patlansky for this performance. She has become SA’s very own Blues Queen in the two short years since returning from Canada to her ancestral home in Africa.

1.5. PUPPET ASYLUM AT THE BAXTER THEATRE - www.computicket.com

South Africa’s top ventriloquist, Conrad Koch, teams up with multi-award winning director Heinrich Reisenhofer to bring his highly acclaimed new one-man comedy show, Puppet Asylum to Cape Town. Using post-modern puppets that include the notorious political analyst, Chester Missing, this highly acclaimed extravaganza of world class comedy and cool puppetry effects runs for a season at the Baxter Golden Arrow Studio from 10 to 28 January 2012. Performances are at 20.15 Tuesday to Saturday.

Set in a special ‘loony bin’, Conrad has one last chance to get his crazy puppets released but only if he can get them to behave in front of a test audience. The problem is that his main puppet, Chester Missing of LNN fame, who is also Conrad’s outspoken BEE business partner, no longer wants to be a ventriloquists’ puppet; his ambition instead is to go solo and host his own TV talk show. Hilary, the ostrich, who despises playing second fiddle to Chester, is a ‘has-been’ alcoholic show-girl, desperate to make her own star come-back, and Ronnie, the cute but savage green monster, cannot control his impulses in front of people despite Conrad’s best efforts to teach him manners and curb his behaviour. The result is a spectacular and hilarious journey of verbal insanity that pushes the boundaries of ventriloquism and comedy.

Tickets on Tuesdays cost R50, Wednesday and Thursday R80, Friday and Saturday R90. Book through Computicket, Shoprite and Checkers outlets, call 0861 915 8000, on line www.computicket.com or at the Baxter 021 685 7880. Who's your daddy...?

The following are all replies that Essex women have written on Child Support Agency Forms in the section for listing "father's details;"

These are genuine excerpts from the forms. Be sure to check out #10. It takes 1st prize and #3 is runner up.

1. Regarding the identity of the father of my twins, Makeeshia was fathered by Maclearndon McKinley I am unsure as to the identity of the father of Marlinda, but I believe that she was conceived on the same night.

2. I am unsure, as to the identity of the father of my child as I was being sick out of a window when taken unexpectedly from behind. I can provide you with a list of names of men that I think were at the party if this helps.

3. I do not know the name of the father of my little girl. She was conceived at a party at 360 East Bolton Avenue where I had sex with a man I met that night. I do remember that the sex was so good that I fainted. If you do manage to track down the father, can you please send me his phone number? Thanks.

4. I don't know the identity of the father of my daughter. He drives a BMW that now has a hole made by my stiletto in one of the door panels.
Perhaps you can contact BMW service stations in this area and see if he's had it replaced.

5. I have never had sex with a man. I am still a Virginian. I am awaiting a letter from the Pope confirming that my son's conception was ejaculate and that he is the Saver risen again.

6. I cannot tell you the name of Alleshia dad as he informs me that to do so would blow his cover and that would have cataclysmic implications for the economy. I am torn between doing right by you and right by the country. Please advise...

7. Tyrone Hairston is the father of child A If you do catch up with him, can you ask him what he did with my AC/DC CDs? Child B who was also borned at the same time.... Well, I don't have clue.

8. From the dates it seems that my daughter was conceived at Euro-Disney World; maybe it really is the Magic Kingdom.

9. So much about that night is a blur. The only thing that I remember for sure is Gordo Ramsey did a programme about eggs earlier in the evening. If I had stayed in and watched more TV rather than going to the party at 56 Miller St, mine might have remained unfertilized.

10. I am unsure as to the identity of the father of my baby, after all, like when you eat a can of beans you can't be sure which one made you fart.
